Over the years we've sold many a contest winner and we have many repeat customers who return every year - because they know we stock only the ugliest sweaters on the planet. So what makes a prize winning sweater? Well, we're sharing our secrets for finding the perfect Ugly Christmas Sweater. Read on.....

Raid Aunt Maude's Closet. If you haven't already been the victim a.k.a. unfortunate gift recipient of said ugly sweater, investigate other sources available to you. If you're against the idea of ransacking Grandma's wardrobe or mugging a kindergarten teacher, look to the worldwide web. Google is your friend.

Shop Early. Serious ugly sweater shoppers start early to have first pick of the best (worst) sweaters - our sweaters start flying off the shelves before Halloween. While waiting till the last minute may still net you a seriously heinous sweater, the early bird gets the worm.

Sears ain't got it. If you're truly determined to win that contest, forget schlepping through the mall. While your choices may include....hmm... some slightly unattractive sweaters, that just ain't gonna cut it. Because they just don't make 'em like they used to. For the truly ugliest of sweaters, your best bet is to shop for vintage sweaters online - where you can browse the vast array of ugliness (in just your size!) while chillin' in your underwear. Like I'm doing right now. That being said, if buying online make sure you're dealing with a trusted seller and know exactly what you're getting. We've been doing this for several years, and believe me, we know our ugly. Our sweaters will all include measurements, all flaws are clearly noted and your sweater will arrive on your doorstep clean and ready to wear. And we accept returns.

Bizarre Themes. Whilst shopping for said ugly sweater, theme is of the utmost importance. The goal is to find the most outrageous, ridiculous, vile, embarrassing sweater possible. Tip: if Great Grandma Edith thinks it's "cute", then mission accomplished. Look for heavily beaded, sequined, puffy balls, 3-D appliques or the king of all ugly sweaters - sweaters that light up. Sweaters depicting bizarre themes are also highly desirable - such as ice skating cats, sledding snowmen, santas on candy cane skis or, as seen below, a friggin goose wearing a wreath. Couples matching sweaters are also a nice touch.

The Tootsie Factor. Guys, don't be afraid to wear a gal's sweater or vice versa. The majority of Christmas sweaters are technically made for ladies...However, for the purposes of an Ugly Christmas Sweater event it's ok to put your manliness aside for a minute. Men's, Women's, who cares? I mean, really, if you're going to being seen in public sporting a vile sweater, does it really matter? I think not.

Time for Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties! We've compiled some ideas and tips for throwing a smashing party......

Music

First and foremost, you must set the mood for your party. What I'm saying is, turn up the blinking lights and slap some cheesy seasonal records on the turntable. Preferably at top volume. Here are my personal picks for the absolute worst in Christmas music...which really sets the tone with a room full of drunken louts in ugly sweaters.

I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas Offender: Gayla Peevy
Ok, why a hippo and not, say, a red eyed tree frog? Can you just imagine the huge, steaming piles to clean up? I don't get it.

Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer Offender: Elmo and Patsy
Admittedly campy, but I actually like this song.

Christmas Shoes Offender: Bob Carlisle
So it's like this. One local radio station starts playing Christmas music the day after Thanksgiving....24 hours a day...non stop. I am not making this up. And this damn, sappy song is played at least 47 times an hour. 1st time: ok song. 3,056,981th time: I want to shove a plastic fork in my ear.

All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth Offender: Spike Jones & His City Slickers
Nothing makes me want to cut a rug more than a badly singing, toothless child sporting a speech defect. FAIL.

Last Christmas Offender: WHAM
Dear WHAM: please stick to waking me up before you go go and careless whispering. Thank you, that is all.

Jingle Bells Offender: The Barking Dogs
Since I can't even get my dog off the couch, I can't fathom how they lined up these dogs to bark at the appropriate times.

'Nuff said.

Games

Of course you must keep your guests entertained, so here's a few activities which, we've discovered, are more fun whilst imbibing gallons of holiday spirits.

Gag Gift Exchange
Have everyone bring a horrible, ugly or just downright bizarre wrapped gift to exchange- this activity is most fun after cocktails have been heavily ingested and cousin Larry is wearing a lampshade. Some examples from previous Ugly Sweater parties include:

-70's rotary phone sans cord (cordless phone - get it? Now that's funny, I don't care who ya are)
-tacky knick knacks
-9 year old fruitcake
-opened box of Depends
-painted rock
-giant fork and spoon
-humungo sized underwear
-maxi pad slippers (these were hysterical - we found instructions here)
-box of XS condoms
-losing lottery tickets
-one shoe

The goal is to bring whatever useless, tacky, used, hilarious objects you can scrounge from around your house. Have everyone draw names or numbers and let the hilarity ensue.

Pass the Bows
Hand out wrapping bows (the sticky kind) to each guest to wear on their sweater. Whenever someone says "ugly sweater" the person nearest steals their bow. The guest wearing the most bows at the end of the party wins a prize. And don't go sticking the bows all over your naughty bits because even though you think you're being funny and original.....you're not.

Christmas Balls
Fill a clear container with ornaments. The guest that guesses the number of balls wins a prize.

Refreshments
What would an Ugly Sweater party be without alcohol?

Snow Job
2 oz. pear schnapps
1 oz. half and half

Mix ingredients and sprinkle with ground cinnamon.

Snowman Piss
4 oz. eggnog
1/2 oz. white chocolate liqueur
1 oz Southern Comfort

Mix ingredients, serve chilled

Candy Cane Martini
1 -2 oz vodka
1- 1 ½ tsp peppermint schnapps

Mix and serve chilled, in a martini glass rimmed in crushed candy canes.

Reindeer Piss
Hot cider. 'Nuff said.

For snacks, we suggest.....

Snowman Balls
2 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs
2T baking cocoa
1 cup powdered sugar
1 cup chopped nuts
1/4 cup coconut syrup
1/4 cup rum or brandy

1 bag semi sweet chocolate chips
2 cups chinese noodles

Melt chocolate chips and stir in chinese noodles. Spoon onto wax paper lined cookie sheets and allow to harden. Tip: for extra gross out factor, add a plastic fly on top.

1 bag mini marshmallows
peanuts

Everytime I think of horror movies, I flash back to those cheesy 80's slasher films like the ones with Jason and Freddy - or even worse, killer tomatoes or clowns. I don't get them. I guess I'm too analytical to be scared - like, really, a killer wearing an ugly striped sweater or a murdering Chucky doll don't fool me. Totally un-scary. I once watched "Hellraiser" - you know, the one with the weird guy that looks like a pin cushion. Instead of being terrified, I was reminded of all the sewing I had to catch up on.

Anyway, you know the drill. You're having a sleep over with your teenage friends, wearing flimsy pajamas or see-through lingerie, innocently engaging in a pillow fight - all whilst the masked killer is lurking in the closet. When he jumps out and beheads your friends, you scream incessantly, trip over a leaf and fall down. Even though he's walking in slo-mo and wearing an ill-fitting mask, he still catches you and guts you like a fish. They're all the same - but thankfully we have just the outfit for you.

On a side note, I just googled images of "80's horror movies" and a picture of the singer Tiffany popped up. I swear I am not making this up. But I digress....

So, ok, you may have known them as "stoners", "rockers" or "punkers", but in my high school (circa 1989), they were known as "metalheads" - thus we shall refer to them as such.

Easily identified by their long hair, concert t-shirts, stonewashed jeans and jackets, this species could usually be found rebuilding a carbeurator or flux capacetor in shop class, or - in the words of the great bard Vince Neil - smoking in the boys room. They were cool. They were dangerous. They listened to music that scared us. And we were all turned on by their mullets even though we didn't want to admit it.

The coolest P.I., hands down. And it's all about the 'stache, people. A creepy flesh colored, Spencer Pratt style poor excuse for facial hair is just not acceptable. A fu manchu or handlebar mustache, although glorious, are just not going to cut it. To reach Tom Selleck status, a full on cookie brush of epic proportions must be sported upon one's upper lip or your costume will fall flatter than Aunt Martha's sad spinach souffle. Now that we've discussed the importance of rocking a killer 'stache, let's move on to some tight jeans or shorty shorts and of course the Hawaiian shirt. Accessorize with a ball cap, lei and 40 pounds of chest hair. Notice how his shirt is tucked in to those tight jeans and unbuttoned to the navel. This is not a guy who's afraid to show off his firm, manly thighs and tight backside........is it getting hot in here? Now normally we profile a few newly listed items on our blog every week. This week we have something so amazing, so friggin' unbelievable that it deserves it's own showcase.

Vintage 80's reversible music vest with speakers

Nothing screams 80's like a kick ass sleeveless vest, yo.

But wait - there's more!

Built in speakers? Check. Portable cassette tape player? Included. Unused original earplugs? You got it.

Here's how it works: a small speaker in each side of the collar is wired to a single male adapter and plugs into the tape cassette player that fits neatly inside the front pocket. The wire is hidden inside built-in plackets that extend the front of the vest along the zipper.

Can be used with either the speaker option or, if you don't want folks overhearing your Flock of Seagulls tape playing at top volume, it may also be used with the included original and unused earphones.

Works with either the included tape player or any portable music player with a 3.5mm female auxiliary input jack (tested and worked with our Ipod Nano and yes we took a moment to rock out with a little Billy Squire.)

Everything is completely removable for cleaning. AND it's reversible. Like it wasn't awesome enough already?
